Name: Heiau (Temple) Drum
Origin: Hawaiian Islands
Artist: Unknown
Description: Drums of this style, but much larger, were used in the ancient heiau, temples, for religious ceremonies involving sacred dancing. Only men performed at these ceremonies and only men played the big drums. Between uses the drums were kept in a special hut that was kapu, off limits, to all but the drum master. They were called pahu heiau.
