statue Name: RIDER IN WOOD
Origin: Nigeria, West Africa
Artist: Unknown
Description: This piece was acquired at the shop of a famous woodcarver, L.O. Fakaye, in southern Nigeria. The name of the master is carved into the bottom, but the statue was carved by an apprentice as a practice piece. It represents a Yoruba warrior mounted on a burro. It is very well done, with fine detail, but on close examination it can be seen that decorative elements like the bridle have different patterns on each side of the statuette, as if the carver were trying out different techniques.
