WORKING WITH THE ELEMENTS
There are 7 elements to work with in Hawaiian Shamanism. These can be worked with telepathically, symbolically, or, most effectively, with the process known as "Pace & Lead" or "Grok & Guide." Attunement with the elements can be used to enhance personal power or personal power may be used to direct and influence the elements.
Following are the elements with their Hawaiian names, symbols to imagine at the navel (piko) to evoke them, change imagery to increase or lessen their symbolic or actual effect, and areas that can be assisted with elemental healing.
FIRE/AHI
- Symbol: Flame, sun, star, lightning or rainbow at the piko.
- Changes: flame to embers; embers to flame.
- Service: Fires, heat, cold, darkness, light, emotions, swelling, infections.
WATER/WAI
- Symbol: Waterfall, fountain, stream or cloud at the piko.
- Changes: ice to liquid; liquid to ice (alt: cloudy to clear, dry to wet)
- Service: Rain, floods, tides, drought, clouds, water supply, tension, stress, anciety, agitation.
WIND/MAKANI
- Symbol: whirlwind at the piko.
- Changes: gale to zephyr; zephyr to gale.
- Service: Hurricanes, tornadoes, winds, stillness, highs, lows, air, tension, confusion.
STONE/POHAKU
- Symbol: Crystal, crystal cluster, mineral or mountain at the piko.
- Changes: granite to sand; sand to granite.
- Service: Earthquakes, landslides, volcanos, erosion, soil, tension, anxiety, doubt.
PLANT/LA'AU
- Symbol: Tree, flower or herb at the piko.
- Changes: seed to tree; tree to seed.
- Service: Healing, fruitfulness, growth, love.
ANIMAL/HOLOHOLONA
- Symbol: An animal of choice at the piko.
- Changes: running to resting; resting to running.
- Service: Strength, energy, confidence, trust.
HUMAN/KANAKA
- Symbol: A spiritual figure or hero at the piko.
- Changes: calm to joyful; joyful to calm.
- Service: Success, prosperity, skill, spirituality.
