VISIT TO A VERMONT STONE CHAMBER - Page 3 |
Across from the chamber we all noticed an odd hole in the ground just a few feet in front of the large house foundation.

Michael lay down in the mud and thrust his digital camera into the hole and took this picture, something no one else had ever done. To everyone's surprise it was a stone-lined mini-chamber with its own lintel, about a meter wide and half a meter deep. Maybe it was a Celtic doghouse.

Here is the standing stone mentioned earlier. The people on the left are not praying, they are waiting to catch my wife, Gloria. A curious feature of this stone is that when you stand with your hands on it in the position Gloria is in you can feel a strong pull to the left. Depending on the person this ranges from a mild tug to a force strong enough to toss you aside.

Our guide Lee stands next to the megalith. It is weathered and bedecked with lichen on all sides and there's no way to tell if it's been there a hundred years or a thousand. Nevertheless, we are all very grateful to Lee for taking the time to show us this fascinating site.

So now we have another mystery to wonder about.
