Kauluapaoa Heiau

Haena's Ke'e Beach

return to Kauai Page or Go To Next Picture

In Haena at the far northwest corner of Kauai, at the end of the government road is Ke'e Beach. Tourists find excellent snorkelling and swimming and hikers start on the Kaualau Trail into The Napali. Here also is the Halau Hula in the Kauluapaoa Heiau. This heiau and halau along with the house platform of High Chief Lohiau figure greatly in the Pele and Hiiaka legend. Pele is the volcano goddess, with her home on Big Island. Hiiaka is her youngest sister who agreed to bring Pele's lover, Lohiau, to Big Island from Kauai. At the west end of the parking lot on the Mauka (Mountain) side there is a small path that goes south along the ocean edge. Find and walk along that path.
