If you were able to go past the grate you would see this, with discarded tarps scattered around the opening, water pipes going in and a warning sign. This cave leads to the amphitheater.
Now you can retrace your steps to the sandy path and follow it all the way to the top, making note of the row of large limestone rocks that cross the path about midway.
