HANALEI HEIAU

The Taro Fields Below

Looking north you can see Hanalei's famous taro fields. Taro, or kalo, is a starchy vegetable with heart-shaped leaves and a large, root-like corm which is baked and used to make "poi," once the main staple food for Hawaiians. Taro is grown in paddies that are still planted, cultivated and harvested by hand. The Hanalei Valley used to be covered with paddies and irrigated terraces even climbed up the hills. That makes it easy to understand why this heiau was so important.
