HANALEI HEIAU

From Across The Valley

Note: As of 2004 the trail leading to the heiau has been blocked off with a fence because the lower section was completely washed away in a storm.

On a small hill above the Hanalei River about two miles upstream is a recently-discovered heiau which has no recorded history, and therefore no name. Because of increased awareness of sacred sites in Hawaii, the existence of the heiau came to light when it was found that a powerline pole had been built right on top of it a good number of years ago. At that time few knew or cared about sacred sites. Since the re-discovery of the heiau the site has been cleared and a trail made for visitors. In the photo, look for the light-colored hill directly across the river.
