...And A Rain Of Mud

Along with black sand, a type of ash was expelled by the volcano which mixed with water in the atmosphere and came down as a rain of mud, sometimes in the form of round pellets the size of BBs or birdshot. In this photo you can see that there were alternating layers of muddy ash and lava sand that fell from the sky. No one knows how long the explosion lasted. It could have gone on for days or even weeks.
